Scott Prime and Ian Ferguson are seeded to meet in the final of the men's singles at the Birmingham Closed on Sunday, at the North Solihull Sports Centre.
A match between Prime, the current 'golden boy' of the sport in the city and the legendary Ferguson is a mouth-watering prospect for the sport.
"This a throwback to the halcyon days of the 1970s when Birmingham had the strongest league in the country," insisted Birmingham Association chairman Dean Hicks.
"Scott is starting to beat top 50 ranked players, whilst Ian has dominated in the city for more than a decade."
"We must not forget that there is also a plethora of talented players who will challenge the top two.
"It is exciting times for the sport in the city, with several former star players having returned, or are intent on returning to play locally," added Hicks.
Prime is confident of adding the Birmingham title to his recent list of successes.
"I am the current Warwickshire champion, have been unbeaten in winning the Birmingham Premier League individual award and intend to gain the hat-trick on Sunday," stated Prime.
"Ian has been a good player for many years, but now it is my time."
Ferguson has had a well publicised break from the sport, but is back and keen to add another title to his vast collection.
"There is no pressure on me, I haven't played much competitive table tennis recently, so I will just go and enjoy myself," said a relaxed Ferguson.
"As far as the hat-trick of successes for Scott goes, good luck to him, I seem to remember only one other person achieving this, oh yes me!."
Current champion Mike Brown and his Kingshurst Bribar team-mate Steve Bertie are seeded 3/4, with the likes of Chris Leach, Ed ward Lynn and Navinder Matharu all capable of upsetting the odds.
Browne and Bertie are top seeds in the men's doubles, with Prime/Leach and Ferguson/Lynn the dangers.
Kingshurst youngsters Jack Williamson and Alan Caffrey look set to dominate the junior events, with Ray Dixon and Neil Wheatley of Colebridge, a cut above the opposition at O'50 and 0'60.
British League team-mates Helen Turner and Sarah Riach will ensure a competitive ladies singles.
Organiser Jim Whitehead is delighted with another increased entry for the tournament.
