Tom Hearne and Rajinder Davsi, both from the Colebridge club in Shirley, won national titles in the UK Clubs for Young People Championship, held at the Halton Centre, Widnes. Hearne, who attends Baverstock Sixth Form College in Kings Heath, became U19 champion after a tremendous battle with Tom Creevy (Liverpool) in the final, which went the distance. The Birmingham player won the first two games, but was pegged back, before hitting through his opponent to clinch the crown. Davsi, of Wheelers Lane School, was in a class of his own to take the U14 title. Scott Danter (Solihull Sixth Form College) lost out to Creevy at the semi final stage at U19, while another Colebridge player Michael Chan, reached the last eight at U16 level. "We have entered players in the competition for over 20 years and it is the first time that we have had champions at two levels" enthused club leader Neil Wheatley.
Kingshurst Bribar 'A' march on in the First Division of the Birmingham Summer League, with an emphatic 8-2 victory over Land Rover 'A'. Mike Browne and Scott Prime, the city's top two players were unbeaten, although Prime was taken the distance by both Paul Thomas and Chris Allen. Andy Evans was in superb form to gain a treble for Quinborne at Beaufort Sports 'A', but a fine team effort from the home side enabled them to win 6-4. Streetly 'A' gained a 6-4 success at Sutton 'A', with John Waters beating Graham Williams 12-10 in the fifth to clinch the win.
Bob Findlay is enjoying a fine season for Walmley in Division Two and he gained another maximum against Sutton 'D', with Roger Ellerington also winning three in an 8-2 triumph. Colebridge/Hockley had a surprise 7-3 score-line over Bournville, with Mike Evetts showing his best form of the campaign. Martin Round remains the only unbeaten player in the section, after another maximum for Sutton Coldfield 'B' over Beaufort Sports 'B', in a 7-3 success. Sutton 'C' also had a 7-3 over Beaufort, with youngster Nabil Khalfey again outstanding. Steve Smith gained a treble for leaders Smithereens against Sutton 'C', which included a 15-13 in the fifth win over Khalfey.
Beaufort Sports 'C' stay top of Division Three, after a 7-3 victory over Sutton 'F', despite Derek Turner picking up three for Sutton. Lodge Road beat the youngsters of Kingshurst 'B' 7-3, with Mark Cohen gaining a treble.
