Andy Evans was unstoppable for West Midland Phones 'A', in their opening fixture against promoted Land Rover 'A', in the Premier Division of the Birmingham League.  The attacking ace received little support however, with the home side recording a 6-4 success.  Dean Opbroek clinched the win for Rover with an easy victory over Tim Freeman.

 

Steve Pinder and Dean Harvey won two singles each for Hall Green 'A' against Colebridge Giants in Division One, but a determined double from backhand specialist Brian Morris enabled Giants to share the spoils in a 5-5 draw.  Farhan Petkar was unbeaten for Sutton 'B' over Colebridge Eagles in a 5-5 draw, with Alan Hall of Eagles forced to concede two games through injury.

 

Sutton 'D' pipped last seasons third placed Smithereens 6-4 in Division Two, as Martin Round started the campaign with a treble,  Promoted Streetly 'B' were no match for Quinborne 'A, who had maximums from Dan Ranford and Glenn Whitlock to thank for an 8-2 score-line.  Tony Greene was the hero for Colebridge Falcons against club-mates Colebridge Hawks in a 5-5 draw, with the veteran attacker clinching a 14-12 in the fifth success over rising star Matt Allen, in the final set of the night.  Roger Townson and John Dineen both gained maximums for Land Rover "C' at Sutton 'C', in an emphatic 9-1 victory.

 

Bournville 'B' beat promoted West Midlands Phones 'B' 6-4 in Division Three, with Peter Haslam recording a maximum.

 

Steve Moss was the star for Hall Green 'E' in their Division Four clash with Kingshurst Bribar 'E', with the all rounder gaining a maximum, in an 8-2 triumph.

 

Lodge Road hammered Jacombs 'B' 8-2 in Division Five, Alton Burnett and Mark Cohen unbeaten.

 

Helen Turner and Sarah Riach, Birmingham's top two women players, were both in excellent form to help Uxbridge win all five of their matches in the Women's British League.
