League Week 14 Report
John Waters and Terry Cooper were both unbeaten for Streetly 'A' in their impressive 8-2 victory over Land Rover 'A', in the Premier Division of the Birmingham League. Rover fared better against Kingshurst Bribar 'B', going down 6-4 as Bob Allcock beat both Roger Morris and Karl Manning of Kings. Kingshurst Bribar 'A' warmed up nicely for their forthcoming 'Battle of Brum II' against Curdworth, with a thumping 9-1 success over West Midlands Phones 'A', only Andy Evans beating Paul Taylor for Phones. Phones inflicted another defeat on Sutton 'A' by a 6-4 margin, with Evans gaining a maximum, and Helen Turner and Derek Backhouse winning two each for the visitors.
Sandwell Unison and Sutton 'B' fought out a 5-5 draw in Division One, Unison's George Hutton gaining crucial last game wins over both Graham Williams and Andy Choi. Jacombs 'A' had 5-5 draws against both Kingshurst Bribar 'D' and Hockley Heath 'A'. Mark Georgevic was unbeaten against Kings, while an impressive treble from Heath's Dean Hicks was the feature of that match. Bhavesh Amlani of Bournville 'A' was too good for Land Rover 'C', gaining a comfortable maximum in an 8-2 win.
The battle for promotion from Division Two is hotting up, with Smithereens winning 6-4 at Sutton 'D'. Steve Smith bringing off an 11-9 win in the fifth over Roy Astle in the last set of the evening to clinch it. Colebridge Giants were without No 1 Frank Cotter and only a hard fought treble from Brian Morris ensured a 5-5 draw with St Chads. Colebridge Hawks were 5-2 down at Walmley 'A', but a spirited comeback ensured a 5-5 score-line.
Paul Thomas won three for Land Rover 'D' in Division Three against Colebridge Indians, as his side got back to winning ways by a 7-3 margin. Streetly 'B' crushed Land Rover 'E' 9-1, with Graham Fleet and David Collins both gaining maximums. Bournville 'B' won 9-1 against Sutton 'E', clinching all five sets that went to five games, although Sutton got back on the winning trail against Walmley 'B' 7-3, as Derek Ellis beat both Stan Willis and Tim Stevens in five games.
Walmley 'C' gained a 6-4 success at Land Rover 'F', with Tony Williams, Bob Mason and Bob Hawthorne winning the last three sets after being 4-3 down. The youngsters of Sutton 'G' hammered Land Rover 'F' 9-1 in Division Four, whilst Ray Cobley was unbeaten for Beaufort Sports 'C' in their 6-4 win at Sutton 'H'.
Quinborne 'B' gained an 8-2 success at Jacombs 'B' in Division Five.
