League Week 15 Extra
Battle of Brum II, the eagerly awaited clash of the giants in the Birmingham League, which was due to take place at the Curdworth club tonight, has been cancelled due to an injury to Kingshurst's Mike Browne, who won the men's singles at the Birmingham Closed recently. Browne has been plagued with injury this season, with his latest problem being a calf strain. "It should be a squad game, I am surprised we agreed for it to be cancelled," joked Curdworth legend Ian Ferguson. "Seriously, we want to beat them with their top team out, without their best player it would have been no contest." 'Fergie', will be determined to retain his magnificent unbeaten league record this season and make sure his side record their 11th successive Premier League title, as he ends his incredible career in the sport at the end of the season.
Jack Williamson, the 13 year old from Kingshurst who is described by Upson as the most gifted player he has ever coached, had the best win of his career at the Derby Cadet Four Star event, beating England No 5 U15 player Chris Doran (Northampton).
Ray Dixon was again in fine form for Colebridge Aces in the Premier Division, gaining a maximum in a 6-4 win at Kingshurst 'C', although Al Broadbent of Kings did well to beat both Mick Kendall and Pete Roddy.
Harry Sideras and Tony Stewart were unbeaten for Beaufort Sports 'A', in their 9-1 hammering of Land Rover 'C' in Division One. Colebridge Hawks beat Quinborne 'A' 6-4 in Division Two, despite a treble from runaway individual leader Dan Ranford.
Mike Evetts and Dean Hicks both notched trebles, as Hockley Heath 'B' stepped up their Division Three promotion bid, with a comprehensive 9-1 defeat of Walmley 'B'.
West Midlands Phones 'B' showed they are a class above anyone else in Division Four, recording an impressive 8-2 win at Beaufort Sports 'C', with Sally Russell gaining a maximum. Sutton 'F' crushed their 'H' team 9-1, as Alan Healey and Derek Ellis gained maximums, while Lodge Road and Walmley 'C' drew 5-5.
Jim Ferguson was the man of the match for Baverstock 'A', in their 7-3 victory over Sutton 'I' in Division Five, although Ron O'Malley took him to 11-9 in the fifth. Jacombs 'B' won 6-4 at West Midlands Police, despite another maximum from Ron Fraser.
