Hamstead A recovered well to record a 6-4 success at reigning Premier Division champions Smiths Wood A to throw the title race wide open. The visitors were 4-3 behind following excellent wins for England cadet Jack Williamson over the Bertie brothers. Pete Waite proved too experienced for Williamson, before Lester Bertie crushed Michael Browne in straight games, which enabled Steve Bertie, the current Birmingham champion, the chance to clinch the win against his former side beating Scott Prime 11-5 in the decider after being two games down. Chris Burgess won three for Colebridge Braves at West Midlands Police A, but the home side still won 6-4, with two singles wins for Andy Hare on his debut. Streetly A gained a crucial 6-4 at Sutton Coldfield A, while Smiths Wood B beat their C side 6-4, thanks to a maximum from Alan Caffery.
In division one youngster Perry Nash produced a magnificent
maximum for Smiths Wood D, in a 6-4 win over Sutton Coldfield B. Dave Smye
clinched victory for Smiths with a thrilling 14-12 success over the unorthodox
Graham Williams. Quinborne A edged home over Smithereens A 6-4, despite three
from Simon Bailey for the visitors, which included a first ever win over Dan
Ranford. A hat-trick from Pete Roddy enabled Colebridge Dinosaurs to draw with
club-mates Chiefs. Three good wins from Mark Georgevic enabled F.Jacombs A to
draw with Sandwell Unison. Linden Douglas was pushed hard by Bournville A but
came through to inspire Hamstead B to a 7-3 victory.
Promotion contenders Beaufort Sports B and Maypole A played out a hard fought
draw with a succession of close matches. West Midland Phones A just scraped by
Sutton Coldfield D with a hat-trick from Colin Platt, including a 14-12 finale
against Pete Worship in the final set. Close encounter of the third in division
2 this week saw Colebridge Eagles and Giants draw, with six sets going the
distance and three to four.
In-form John Cox went through the card for Colebridge Falcons giving
them a 7-3 success in their division three clash with Sutton Coldfield E.
Claire Baker replied with two for the visitors including 15-13 in the 4th
and 5th games over Fadi Ezaddin. Beaufort Sports C march on at the
top courtesy of a treble from Rob Rowson. Other contenders Maypole B just
missed out on a whitewash when Ann Lloyd spared Colebridge Imps blushes when she
beat Peter Kirkham in the final set of the night. Graham Fleet and Richard
Parks helped give Streetly C an 8-2 win at Bournville B. Paul Thomas was the
star for Ivy Leaf A, winning his three, two in the 5th, to share the
spoils with Smithereens B.
Walmley B went down 9-1 to Colebridge Jaguars with Bernard Oliver and Fadi
Ezaddin recording maximums. They fared a little better later in the week when
they lost 7-3 to their A team. A hat-trick for Mitchell Nash proved to be the
difference in the battle of Smiths Wood in division four, the E beating the F
6-4.
Colebridge Knaves saw off near rivals Sutton Coldfield H thanks to a maximum from Amann Ubhi. Derek Turner reeled in two for Sutton. Quinborne B's 10-0 demolition of Lodge Road A keeps their 100% record and relentlessly in pursuit of Knaves. Trebles for Tony Badham and Tony Griffin helped give Streetly E a 7-3 victory over West Midlands Phones B.
Colebridge Lions ran out 10-0 winners over newcomers Lodge Road C. Youngster Anthony Hughes pushed the experienced Ivy Leaf B trio to the limit, coming away with just one win along with team-mate Keegan Crawford. Alan Winspur and Derek Palser were both unbeaten to take maximum points for Leaf from Smiths Wood H. An all-round team effort by Sutton Coldfield I's Belle Halliwell, Janet Matthews and Ron O'Malley proved to be too much for a Lodge Road B side inspired by maximum man Steve Wright and ran out 6-4 winners.
