Birmingham have one hand on the Midland League trophy, after beating current champions Leamington 7-3. Ian Ferguson, Sasha Grokhotov and Edward Lynn all played a part, as the home side succumbed to a fine team effort. 'Fergie' swept away the considerable challenge of Mark Jackson, Earl Sweenie and Paul Savins, with controlled power and all in straight games. Lynn chipped in with two singles wins, Grokhotov one and there was also a crucial doubles success for the Ferguson/Grokhotov combination, against Jackson/Sweeney. Grokhotov had driven back from Worcestershire county duty in Cornwall the night before the match.
The next match is another crucial clash with Leicester, on December 16, at the
Colebridge club.
Tony Isaacs is yet another star from the past who has made a return to
Birmingham. Staffordshire champion in four different decades, Isaacs, playing
for Broadway, was stunned however by Helen Turner and Sarah Riach of Kingshurst
'C', who helped their side to an 8-2 victory in the Premier Division. Jason
Essex was another returning player, but he lost all three on his debut for
Curdworth against Kingshurst Bribar 'B'. Ferguson and Grokhotov claimed the
other seven games for Curdworth, although 'The Tzar' just scraped home 12-10 in
the fifth against county junior Alan Caffery. Kingshurst Bribar 'A' will take
some stopping in defence of their title, powering to another 10-0 against their
outclassed 'C' team. Andrew Dixon gained a maximum for Streetly 'A' in their
5-5 draw at Beaufort Sports 'A', while Lyndon Douglas did likewise for Hall
Green 'B', who enjoyed their first win of the season in an 8-2 romp over their
'A' side.
Sutton Coldfield 'B' go marching on in Division One, with a 7-3 victory over
Colebridge Eagles. Nabil Khalfey is a firm favourite for the individual title
and registered another three wins. Kingshurst Bribar 'D' had mixed fortunes,
with a 7-3 win over Bournville 'A', followed by a defeat by the same margin to
Sutton 'A'. Paul Hancox capped a fine display over Bournville, with an 11-7 in
the fifth success over the highly rated Bhavesh Amlani, with Sutton pen holder
Andy Choi the difference between the teams in their encounter. Paul Ducros and
Dave Ameghino were both unbeaten for West Midlands Police 'A', in their 8-2
demolition of Colebridge Giants. Sandwell Unison overpowered Quinborne 9-1, as
both Brian Morris and Ashley Savell-Boss registered hat-tricks.
Simon Bailey of Smithereens was the only unbeaten player on view, as his side
drew 5-5 with Beaufort Sports 'B', in a top of the table battle in Division Two.
In the final match of the night Steve Smith beat Beaufort's Rob Sheldon in
straight games, to enable a share of the spoils. Bailey was also unstoppable in
the previous fixture at Colebridge Hawks, with the visitors coming away with an
easy 8-2 success. Hawks got back on track, with a 6-4 victory against Colebridge
Falcons, thanks to a magnificent treble from Ann Lloyd and a stunning 11-8 in
the fifth win for Fadi Ezaddin over John Cox. 21 year old Azaddin has
incredibly only been playing the game for six months. Ian Scott and Steve
Pinder were maximum men for under achievers Hall Green 'C', in their clash with
Sutton 'D', in an 8-2 triumph. George Webb was in fine form, as Sutton 'C' won
7-3 at Streetly 'B'.
Ash Kapadia was in superb form for Beaufort Sports 'C' at Baverstock 'A' in
Division Three, but received little support as the home side clinched a 7-3
victory. Baverstock were held 5-5 at West Midland Phones, despite a smart
treble from Scott Danter. Alan White just edged Tony Arends 11-9 in the fifth,
to clinch a 6-4 success for Walmley 'A' over Ivy Leaf 'A'. Paul Thomas was a
maximum man for Ivy.
Bournville 'B' beat their 'C' team 7-3, with Darren Williams and Tony Sheldon winning three singles each.
Lesley Prais of Jacombs 'B', had a stunning 13-11 in the deciding game victory
over big hitting Farhan Petkar from Sutton Coldfield 'F' in Division Four. Steve
Bailey notched up another maximum for Sutton, however, in a 7-3 win.
Colebridge Jaguars look unstoppable in Division Five, recording another 10-0 win
at Jacombs 'C'. The Nash brothers are both showing great improvement for
Kingshurst Bribar 'F', with Perry unbeaten in the 9-1 win at Baverstock 'C'.
Mitchell won three in the 6-4 home success over Sutton Coldfield 'H', including
a four game triumph over the experienced Ron O'Malley. Sutton got back to
winning ways in style, with a 9-1 trouncing of Jacombs "C', as O'Malley and
Belle Halliwell took three each. An Alan Winspur treble for Ivy Leaf "B', could
not gain his side victory over Colebridge Indians, in a 5-5 draw. Baverstock
"B' trounced Ivy Leaf 8-2 in their next outing, Ryan Percival and Stefan Brown
both gained maximums. Ron Fraser gained his usual maximum for West Midlands
Police 'B', in their 7-3 result over Baverstock 'B', with Chris Akpobaro also in
fine form for Police.
