Michael Browne won his fifth men's singles title, at the Warwickshire Closed Championships, held at the St Nicholas Centre, Warwick. The Kingshurst attacking ace beat team-mate Steve Bertie by three games to one in the final, having ended the reign of Scott Prime at the semi-final stage. Browne is currently suffering with tennis elbow, but this did not stop his progress, as he also defeated No 2 seed Mark Jackson (Leamington) and came back from 8-4 down in the fifth against Mike Bishop in the first round.
The Kingshurst club dominated the day, with Helen Turner regaining her ladies
singles title at the expense of Rachel Pilgrim (Rugby). Jack Williamson won
both the junior and cadet boys events, pulling back from two games down to Alan
Caffery in the junior final.
Birmingham are well and truly back as the dominant league in the county after
this competition and following their Midland League mauling of Leamington the
previous week.
Andrew Dixon roared to a maximum for Streetly 'A', at Kingshurst Bribar 'B', in
the Premier Division. Karl Manning and Caffery fought back for Kings, winning
two singles each, to earn a 5-5 draw for their side. Harry Sideras won two
singles at deuce in the fifth to help Beaufort Sports 'A' draw 5-5 at Hall Green
'B'. John Ludford beat both Jon Ludlow and Dave Rudge in the decider for Green.
Broadway had an impressive 9-1 win at Hall Green 'A', as Steve Robinson and
Carl Morgan both gained maximums.
Brian Morris, of Sandwell Unison, was the only unbeaten player, as his side drew
5-5 with Colebridge Giants in Division One. Title favourites Sutton 'B' cruised
home 9-1 at Quinborne, as Nabil Khalfey and Colin Cleverley had hat-tricks. The
experienced Cleverley beat Dave Freeman,
Glenn Whitlock and Dan Ranford all in the fifth game. Bhavesh Amlani included a
crushing victory over the highly rated Mark Georgevic in his treble, as
Bournville 'A' beat Jacombs 'A' 6-4.
Smithereens remain in promotion form in Division Two, as Simon Bailey inspired
them to a 7-3 success at Sutton Coldfield 'C'. Hall Green 'C' crushed
Colebridge Hawks 10-0. Beaufort Sports 'B' just edged Colebridge Falcons 6-4,
with Tony Stewart's 14-12 win over Tony Greene the crucial set here. Howard
Knight of Sutton Coldfield 'D', was the difference between the teams, as
Streetly 'B' were beaten 6-4 in a local derby. Chris Allen continued his fine
season for Hall Green 'D' at Sutton 'E' in a 6-4 triumph for the away side.
