Birmingham boosted their Midland League title hopes, with a thrilling 7-3 victory over Leicester. Ian Ferguson, Sasha Grokhotov and Edward Lynn won two singles each, while the Ferguson/Grokhotov combination inflicted the first doubles defeat of the season in any competition on Andy LeButt and Dave Grundy. The first three singles all went the distance, with Birmingham winning all three, with Grokhotov setting the standard with a 12-10 in the fifth success over Joel Carlton.
Alan Caffery was unbeaten for Kingshurst Bribar 'B' against Broadway, in the
Premier Division. Kings won 8-2, which will mean a fight for survival in the
second half of the season for Broadway. Streetly 'A' continued in fine form,
with their latest triumph being a 7-3 victory over doomed Hall Green 'A', via a
John Waters hat-trick. Kingshurst Bribar 'A' hammered Beaufort Sports 'A'
8-2, with Steve Bertie unbeaten. Jon Ludlow had excellent wins over both
Jack Williamson and Mike Browne for Sports. Andy Jackson had a maximum for
Beaufort in their 5-5 draw with Kingshurst Bribar 'C'.
Roger Ellerington, Paul Hancox and Roger Morris all proved to be unplayable for
Kingshurst Bribar 'D', in their stunning 10-0 demolition of Colebridge Eagles in
Division One. John Overton was back to form with a bang for Colebridge Giants,
in their 5-5 draw with Jacombs 'A'. Sutton 'A' are looking good for promotion,
after a surprisingly easy 9-1 success over Sandwell Unison. Penholder Andy Choi
and Clive 'Whirlwind' Stretton were both hat-trick men for Sutton. Sutton
Coldfield 'B' are also going great guns, as a sparkling Nabil Khalfey treble set
them up for a 6-4 win at Bournville 'A'.
Steve Smith clinched a 6-4 win for Division Two leaders Smithereens, by beating
defensive ace John Cox of Colebridge Falcons. George Webb gained a superb
maximum for Sutton 'C' at Hall Green 'D', but the home side claimed victory when
Mick Bere pipped Roy Astle 12-10 in the decider, in an epic battle.
West Midland Phones slammed Walmley 'B' 10-0 in Division Three. Bournville 'C'
won the last four sets against Walmley 'A' to secure a 5-5 draw, with Harry Ford
winning two of them. Paul Thomas picked up yet another Man of the Match award,
as Ivy Leaf 'A' won 8-2 at Kingshurst Bribar 'E'. Baverstock 'A' continued
their excellent season, with a hard fought 6-4 victory at Hall Green 'E'. Luke
Baker and the returning John Harrison were maximum men for Baverstock. Ash
Kapadia was yet another unbeaten performer for Beaufort 'C', in their 5-5 draw
with Bournville 'B'.
Howard Lewis was in fine form for Jacombs 'B', in their Division Four clash with
Kingshurst Bribar 'F'. Lewis included last game wins over both Derek Broadbent
and Mitchell Nash in his three singles successes, which helped his side to a 7-3
triumph. Tim Stevens of Walmley 'C', stopped the youngsters of Streetly 'C' in
their tracks, with three wins in a 5-5 draw. In another 5-5 result, Streetly
'D' drew with Lodge Road.
Ron Fraser notched up his usual hat-trick for West Midlands Police, in their 6-4
victory at Baverstock 'C' in Division Five. Colebridge Jaguars roared to
another victory, with an emphatic 8-2 win at Sutton, Tim Fell and Fadi Ezaddin
unbeaten in this one. Baverstock 'B' just edged Colebridge Indians 6-4, thanks
to a Ryan Percival treble, which included a 13-11 in the fifth win over John
Dyer. Mitchall Nash and Busta Cobley were both unbeaten as Kingshurst
Bribar 'G' crushed Ivy Leaf 'B' 8-2.
