League Weeks 10 & 11 Report
Curdworth were tested to the full by Kingshurst Bribar 'B' in the Premier Division of the Birmingham League. Ian Ferguson gained his usual maximum and Andy Hare just edged Karl Manning 12-10 in the fifth to clinch a 6-4 victory. The champions were back to form against Sutton 'A' in a 9-1 success, with only Derek Backhouse against Phil Burwell winning for the visitors. Mike Browne and Scott Prime were unbeaten for Kingshurst Bribar 'A' in their 9-1 thumping of Colebridge Braves. Edward Lynn was outstanding for Braves in their 5-5 draw with West Midland Phones, with Lynn beating Andy Evans 11-9 in the fifth in a tremendous encounter.
Phones drew again with Land Rover 'A', despite an excellent treble for Rover by Barry Clarke.
Bavesh Amlani is proving a class act for Bournville in Division One, as he clinched another maximum against Kingshurst 'D' in an 8-2 win. Bournville came back from 5-1 down to draw with Beaufort Sports 'A', as Amlani again showed his quality. Beaufort thrashed Kingshurst 'D' 8-2, with Harry Sideras and Jon Ludlow gaining maximums. Dean Opbroek and David Ameghino were both unbeaten for Land Rover 'B' in their 8-2 mauling of their 'C' side with Ameghino and Chris Allen involved in the set of the night, with Ameghino winning 14-12 in the fifth. Sutton 'B' beat their 'C' side 6-4, despite a treble from the impressive Howard Knight.
Colebridge Eagles, the Division Two leaders, were held 5-5 by Sutton 'D', with the Sutton trio of Colin Cleverley, Martin Round and Roy Astle set to have a big say in the promotion race. Smithereens have rocketed up the table in recent weeks and did their prospects no harm with an 8-2 win over Colebridge Hawks, as Steve Smith and
Simon Bailey gained maximums. Dan Ranford of Quinborne 'A' stayed top of the individual chart with three wins in a 5-5 draw with Smithereens. Colebridge Giants kept in the title race with a narrow 6-4 success over Colebridge Falcons, although John Cox won three for Falcons. Falcons got back to winning ways against Walmley 'A' with Cox again unbeaten.
Paul Thomas was in impressive form for unbeaten Land Rover 'D' in their Division Three clash at Walmley 'B', which resulted in a 7-3 win for Rover. Rover just edged their 'E' side 6-4, with Thomas beating John Dineen in a contest that will go a long way to deciding the outcome of the individual title. Streetly 'B' had Graham Fleet to thank for their 6-4 win over Walmley 'B', but Streetly lost by the same margin at Bournville 'B' where Pete Haslam reeled off a treble. Beaufort Sports 'B' pipped Bournville 'B' 6-4, as Ron Kite's 11-8 win in the final game against Haslam proved crucial.
The West Midlands Phones 'B' trio of Simon Russell, Dave Lyne and Jeff Cook are going great guns in Division Four and rattled up an impressive 8-2 score-line against Land Rover 'F'. Rover suffered another defeat in a 7-3 reverse at Beaufort Sports 'C', for whom Ron Harze, Frank Cheshire and Ray Cobley picked up two singles each. Nabil Khalfey picked up another maximum for the youngsters of Sutton 'G', in a 6-4 success over Beaufort. An Alan Healey maximum helped Sutton 'F' to an 8-2 victory at Hockley Heath 'C'.
Streetly 'C' and Sutton 'I' fought out a 5-5 draw in Division Five, with Sutton's Ron O'Malley the only unbeaten player. Luke Baker gained a maximum for Baverstock 'B' in their 5-5 draw at Kingshurst Bribar 'F'.
