Scott Prime is leading a table tennis revolution in the
city, with a whole plethora of youngsters set to follow in the Kingshurst Bribar
player's footsteps.
He inflicted the only defeat of the 2005/6 season on Curdworth's Ian Ferguson
in the Maurice Goldstein Cup final and the 22 year old super-fit top spinner is
determined to hit the UK tournament scene in a big way to improve his standing
in the sport.
"Fergie has been at the top since I started playing and has been a role model
for players like me, now it's my turn, I am going to give it everything to move
up the England rankings.
"A high level of fitness is vital to my game, as I cover a lot of ground and I
am looking forward to pre season football training to bring my level up to the
required standard," insisted Prime.
Prime along with Kingshurst team-mates Mike Browne, Chris Leach, Paul Taylor
and Jason Essex, ended Curdworth's 10 year reign as Birmingham Premier Division
champions last season.
"We can dominate just as they did," he enthused. "With the players we have at
the club and with youngsters such as Jack (Williamson) and Alan (Caffrey) coming
through, the future looks bright.
Colebridge youngsters Navinder Matharu and Tom Hearne, Sutton's Nabil Khalfey
and Williamson and Caffrey are leading the surge of young players, who along
with Prime are bringing a breath of fresh air to the game in the city.
Association chairman Dean Hicks is enthusiastic for the future: "I feel that in
time the Birmingham League will attract the top players from surrounding areas
to play in our competition, to complement our best players, which has not
happened since the days of Desmond Douglas.
Prime, is also a central midfield footballer, who was on Shrewsbury Town's
books between the ages of 13-16 and currently represents Leamington Hibernian in
the First Division of the Midland Combination, as well as Festival League outfit
Belford Rovers.
He also had a spell of coaching in America with the Challenger Sports Group the
leading soccer camp company in the US and he intends to go back there sometime
in the future.
"I coached in nine different states over a four month spell, it was a great
experience." said Prime.
