Scott Prime signalled a new era for the sport in Birmingham, by collecting his first men's singles title at the Warwickshire Closed Championship, at the St Nicholas Centre, Warwick. The 22 year old top spinner from the Kingshurst Bribar club beat team-mate Steve Bertie in straight games, in a high speed final. Prime dropped just two games all day, both to Andy Lebutt (Nuneaton), in a magnificent semi-final, which the Birmingham player took 13-11 in the fifth after a pulsating battle. Reigning champion Ian Packford (Leamington) was swept aside by Prime in the quarter-final.
Navinder Matharu, from the Colebridge club in Shirley, justified his high seeding by reaching the last four, before being blitzed by the power of Bertie. Matharu had ended the challenge of the highly rated Mark Jackson, with a comfortable quarter-final success. Bertie reached both the men's and veterans doubles finals in partnership with Michael Browne, beating Packford and Earl Sweeney in the men's, but losing out to Lebutt and Dave Grundy in the veterans.
Rachel Pilgrim took the ladies singles crown to Rugby, while Coventry's Xio Yang Ma proved a point, by winning both the junior boy's and cadet singles.
